About
Profilometry based Indentation Plastometry (PIP) is a new technology that can determine the stress-strain curve of metallic materials, including yield stress and ultimate tensile strength, from a simple indentation test. Compared to conventional tensile testing it is much quicker, with minimum sample preparation required. It is also much more flexible, so full stress-strain properties can be mapped across a component (such as a weld) and the volume of material required is only 1 % of that for tensile testing. This session will introduce PIP, and demonstrate a use-case of the technology on an additively manufactured nickel based superalloy sample. Some key issues will be discussed (e.g. surface preparation, sample dimensions, grain size of the material, anisotropy) and it will be demonstrated how full stress-strain data can be captured with a test that takes less than three minutes to perform.
